Sentences

A sentence is a group of words which makes a complete sense. A sentence must contain a subject and a verb (although one may be implied). A sentence always start with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

A sentence can convey a statement, a question, an exclamation or a command. There are four types of Sentence.

1. A Declarative or Assertive Sentence : A sentence that makes a statement or assertion. 

Example :

  • Sita is going to school.
  • Ramesh is playing cricket.
2. An Interrogative Sentence : A sentence that asks a question and ends with a question mark.

Example :
  • What is your name ?
  • Where do you live?
3. An Imperative Sentence : A sentence that expresses a command or an entreaty (polite request). 

Example :
  • Be quiet.
  • Have a mercy on them.
4. A Exclamatory Sentence : A sentence that expresses a strong feeling or emotion. 

Example :
  • Hurray! We won the match.
  • What a shame!

There are 4 types of Sentence Structure

1. Simple Sentence Structure : A simple sentence has just one independent clause. 

Example :
  • I like tea.
  • The sun rises in the east. 
2. Compound Sentence Structure : A compound sentence is two (or more) independent clauses joined by a conjunction or semi-colon.

Example :
  • I went to school but Mohan went to the party.
     There are seven coordinating conjunctions :
    and, or, nor, but, for, so, yet

3. Complex Sentence Structure : A complex sentence has an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Example :
  • Our dog barks when she hears a noise.
  • Do you know the man who is talking to Suresh?
Here are some common subordinating conjunctions :
after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where, whether, while

Here are the five basic relative pronouns:
that, which, who, whom, whose

4. Compound-Complex Sentence Structure : A compound-complex sentence consists of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.

Example :
  • The dog started barking so the cat ran away and I couldn’t keep up, so I stopped.
